Chaetodon is the largest (most species-rich) genus of butterfly fish (Chaetodontidae), a family of showy and mostly very colorful tropical sea fish.
Chaetodon species mainly live in the coral reefs of the tropical Indo-Pacific, the Red Sea and the tropical West Atlantic. However, they also occur far less richly in the species north and south of the coral belt and in the rocky reefs of the tropical East Atlantic. Most species live in the shallow water, some are still at depths of 30 to 60 meters and very few occur below.
We will encounter these butterfly fish practically every dive here in the Samui Archipelago, especially at the Shark Island dive site, where many butterfly fish can be seen.
